Health and Behaviour Inventory (HBI)

The Health and Behaviour Inventory (HBI) is a standardized 20-item symptom rating scale used to assess physical, cognitive, emotional, and sleep-related symptoms in youth aged 8-15 after a concussion. The HBI has parent and child versions and measures symptoms using a 4-point scale (never to often). Higher scores indicate more frequent or severe symptoms. The HBI is available for downloading in the following formats:

Scoring:

  • To score the HBI, calculate a total score by summing all items, and generate two composite scores for each follow-up visit: the Cognitive Score (sum of items 1–11) and the Somatic Score (sum of items 12–20).
