Expert Panel

Experts from Canada or the United States with a national or international reputation for clinical care, research in pediatric concussion, and the prevention of pediatric concussion were invited to join the project as expert panel volunteers. Clinical care domains include clinical assessment and management of pediatric concussion with an emphasis on ensuring representation across a full spectrum of health disciplines, expertise in concussion, and competency in research. In addition to the 2014 clinical care panelists, additional experts were invited to join the team to ensure combined expertise across the spectrum of evidence to likely be included in the guideline update (e.g., vestibular and vision therapies, clinical role of advanced neuroimaging, and clinical utility of fluid biomarkers). Prevention of concussion experts include sport-related concussion and non-sport-related concussion (an evolving domain). The members of the guideline panel declared any competing interests and identified their area(s) of expertise for reviewing papers and domain/module working groups.

Expert panelists completed a survey to rate their level of expertise across the variety of domains using the 2014 version of the Pediatric Concussion Guideline. Self-reported ratings informed which domain(s) the panelists would best contribute. In designing the composition of the domain groups, those who self-rated their expertise as “highest level of expertise” were designated as experts in that particular domain group. For instances in which an insufficient number self-identified at the “highest level”, experts with “good level of expertise” were considered to ensure equity in reviewing the literature and revising the domain’s specific recommendation(s).
